    ROLE IN THE GAME: Get Informed

    If you're going to cast an informed vote on November 6th, you're gonna need to be up to speed on the issues and candidates. For every article you read on BuzzFeed.com/politics, you can click the Fantasy Election "+20" button and earn 20 points in the game, with a max of 10 per day.

  • Center for Responsive Politics

    The Center for Responsive Politics is the nation's premier research group tracking money in U.S. politics and its effect on elections and public policy. Nonpartisan, independent and nonprofit, the organization aims to create a more educated voter, an involved citizenry and a more transparent and responsive government. In short, the Center's mission is to: inform citizens about how money in politics affects their lives, empower voters and activists by providing unbiased information, and advocate for a transparent and responsive government.

    ROLE IN THE GAME: Transparency

    Using the CRP's "Quality of Disclosure" rating, candidates will be judged next to their peers on whether or not they openly disclose their campaign funding sources. Based on an average across all Presidential and congressional races for the current month, candidates will earn +20 points for every percentage point they exceed the current "Quality of Disclosure" average, or lose -20 points for every percentage point they come in below the average.

  • CQ Roll Call

    CQ Roll Call provides essential intelligence and grassroots advocacy resources to take action. As the leading provider of congressional news, legislative tracking and advocacy services, CQ Roll Call is the only media company that connects policy professionals and opinion leaders with the information and tools they need to understand and influence Congress.

    ROLE IN THE GAME: Engagement

    Engaging your constituents - and answering their questions - is critical. Using CQ Roll Call's data, we will award candidates points for holding town halls and tele-town halls. Candidates will earn +300 points for each town hall and tele-town hall they host.

  • Facebook

    Facebook is a social networking service and website with over 900 million active users. Users must register before using the site, after which they may create a personal profile, add other users as friends, and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile.

    ROLE IN THE GAME: Engagement

    Facebook has created a new way for politicians to engage with their constituents. Instead of just e-mailing or calling your representative, you can post on their Facebook wall. Likewise, instead of just holding press conferences, politicians can update their statuses and post on their walls. For each Facebook post, candidates will earn + 10 points, with a limit of 5 per day.

  • Foursquare

    Foursquare is a free app that helps you and your friends make the most of where you are. When you're out and about, use foursquare to share and save the places you visit. And, when you're looking for inspiration for what to do next, we'll give you personalized recommendations and deals based on where you, your friends, and people with your tastes have been.

    ROLE IN THE GAME: Engagement

    Constituent engagement and youth participation in the electoral process are key. We will be awarding candidates +50 points for engaging with their constituents by checking-in on foursquare, with a limit of 5 per day. They're not the only ones who can earn points for this though – every time you check into an election-related event, you'll earn +500, with a limit of 1 per day. Remember to use #fantasyelection when checking in to unlock your points!

  • FlackCheck

    FlackCheck.org, sister site of the award-winning FactCheck.org, is a political literacy and engagement website. Amid today’s heated rhetoric, FlackCheck flags instances of incivility and extreme language in its WOW (Way Out of Whack) videos. Patterns of Deception videos illustrate the ways in which campaigns deceive, and the Stand by Your Ad initiative encourages citizens and TV stations to take a stand against inaccurate third-party ads. Also, FlackCheck asks: 'Could Lincoln Be Elected Today?' FlackCheck.org is a project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania.

    ROLE IN THE GAME: Civility

    Candidates that FlackCheck.org deems as having exhibited uncivil behavior (demeaning language, extreme characterizations, language of violence, etc.) on the campaign trail or in political ads will lose -500 points for each instance.

  • GetGlue

    GetGlue is a social network for entertainment. Users check-in and share what they are watching, listening to and reading with friends; get fresh recommendations, exclusive stickers, discounts and other rewards from their favorite shows and movies.

    ROLE IN THE GAME: Candidate & User Engagement (Check-Ins)

    Staying informed about what's happening in the election is important. You can earn points for checking into political programming via GetGlue. You can earn points just for watching an episode of The Daily Show or a segment on Fox News or MSNBC. You'll earn +100 points per check in, with a max of 5 per day. Remember to use #fantasyelection when checking in to unlock your points!

  • POLITICO

    Politico is a nonpartisan, Washington-based political journalism organization that serves as the one-stop shop for the fastest, most in-depth coverage of the president, Congress and the 2012 White House race. POLITICO’s journalists break news and drive conversation about the White House, Capitol Hill and Washington lobbying, as well as the intersection of politics and Wall Street, the media and personalities.

  • POLITIFACT

    PolitiFact is a fact-checking website that rates the accuracy of claims by elected officials and others who speak up in American politics. PolitiFact staffers research statements and rate their accuracy on the Truth-O-Meter, from True to False. The most ridiculous falsehoods get the lowest rating, Pants on Fire.     ROLE IN THE GAME: Honesty

    As candidates make statements on the campaign trail, Fantasy Election players will gain/lose points based on their team's truthfulness. We took Politifact's Truth-O-Meter ratings and assigned a point value to each of them. True +200 points, Mostly True +100 points, Half True 0 points, Mostly False -200 points, False -300 points, and Pants On Fire -500 points.

  • Project Vote Smart

    Vote Smart is a Voter's Self-Defense System providing factual, accurate, relevant information on 40,000 candidates from President down to state legislature in six basic categories: biographies, voting records, special interest ratings, public statements, campaign finances, and issue positions. Supported by citizen contributions, the information is free at (votesmart.org) and over a Voter's Research Hotline (1-888-VoteSmart).

    ROLE IN THE GAME: Transparency

    Candidates who complete Project Vote Smart's acclaimed "Political Courage Test" - clearly making their positions known on the issues of greatest importance to American voters - will be rewarded with +500 points each week.

  • REALCLEARPOLITICS

    RealClearPolitics is the trusted source that sets your political agenda each morning by selecting the must-read stories and analysis from every side of the debate. The well respected RCP Average, which is compiled by the RealClearPolitics editorial team, averages credible, relevant election polls, to give a more consistent and accurate read of where the election is headed.

    ROLE IN THE GAME: Public Opinion

    Candidates who do a good job of connecting with voters and see their polling numbers rise will earn points in the game, while politicians who see their polling numbers drop will be docked points. Real Clear Politics takes credible, relevant election polls and averages them, creating a less biased, and more accurate poll number for candidates. Using the RCP Average as a baseline, candidates will get +20 points for each percentage point increase reflected in new public opinion polls posted to the site, or lose -20 points for each percentage point drop. Also, once races have declared winners, winning candidates will be awarded +1,000 points.

  • Rock the Vote

    Rock the Vote's mission is to engage and build political power for young people in our country. Rock the Vote has registered more than five million young people to vote and has become a trusted source of information for young people about registering to vote and casting a ballot. We use music, popular culture, new technologies and grassroots organizing to motivate and mobilize young people in our country to participate in every election, with the goal of seizing the power of the youth vote to create political and social change.     ROLE IN THE GAME: Election Day Reminder

    Fantasy Election '12 is built to help you better understand the candidates and issues at play in the 2012 Elections, so you'll be an informed and empowered voter when you cast your ballot on November 6th. We wish we could give you points for registering to vote – as you can’t flex your political power if you’re not registered – but unfortunately, that's illegal and we could go to jail (no joke!).     Twitter is an online social networking service and microblogging service with over 500 million active users that enables its users to send and read text-based posts of up to 140 characters, known as "tweets".

    ROLE IN THE GAME: Engagement

    Twitter has created a new way for politicians to engage with their constituents. Instead of just e-mailing or calling your representative, you can tweet them. Likewise, instead of just holding press conferences, politicians can engage constituents on Twitter. For each tweet, players will earn +10 points, with a limit of 5 per day.

  • Wesleyan Media Project

    Hosted at Wesleyan University, the Project enhances transparency by providing the only real-time, publicly available information on the content and targeting of all broadcast television advertisements aired by or on behalf of all federal election candidates in each of the nation's 210 media markets.

    ROLE IN THE GAME: Civility, Transparency

    Civility: Points will be deducted from candidates who air an excessive amount of uncivil, personal ads each week. -500 points will be deducted for each uncivil attack ad a candidate runs beyond the candidate average across all races.

    Transparency: Each week, points will be rewarded or deducted based on the candidates' focus on issues and policies in campaign ads vs. personal attacks - otherwise known as the "substance ratio" of their ads. Based on the average across all races, candidates will receive +20 points for every percentage point they exceed the national "substance ratio" average and lose -20 for every percentage point they come in below the "substance ratio" average.
